Roentgenium

Roentgenium is named after Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen, who discovered X-rays in 1895 and won the first Nobel Prize in Physics in 1901. The element was first synthesized in 1994 by Sigurd Hofmann and his team at GSI in Germany by bombarding bismuth with nickel atoms. Only three atoms were detected in the initial experiments.

Roentgenium is an extremely unstable superheavy element. Its most stable known isotope has a half-life of about 26 seconds. No chemical properties have been measured because too few atoms exist at any given time. Based on its position in the periodic table below gold, roentgenium is predicted to be a noble metal, but this remains unconfirmed. It is fascinating that an element named after the discoverer of X-rays can only be 'seen' through the radiation it emits.

Roentgenium's symbol 'Rg' is a distinctive two-letter element in Spellement. While 'rg' is uncommon at word beginnings, partial emphasis lets spellers use 'r' or 'g' individually — both common consonants. This makes roentgenium a flexible, if exotic, tool for creative element-based word building.
