Germanium

Germanium is named after Germany, the homeland of its discoverer Clemens Winkler, who found it in 1886. Like scandium, germanium was one of the elements Mendeleev predicted — he called it 'eka-silicon' and described its properties with remarkable accuracy years before it was found. Germanium is a metalloid, sitting right between metals and nonmetals on the periodic table.

Germanium was the semiconductor used in the very first transistor, built at Bell Labs in 1947, which launched the electronics revolution. Though silicon eventually replaced it in most chips, germanium is still used in fiber optic cables, infrared optics for night-vision devices, and some solar cells. Germanium lenses can see heat, making them valuable for thermal imaging cameras.
