Nobelium

Nobelium is named after Alfred Nobel, the Swedish inventor of dynamite who established the Nobel Prizes. Its discovery was controversial — teams in Sweden, the US, and Russia all claimed credit during the 1950s and 60s. The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry officially recognized the Soviet team's claim in 1997 but kept the name nobelium, proposed by the Swedish team.

Nobelium is produced by bombarding lighter actinides with ions in particle accelerators. Only tiny amounts have ever been made, and its most stable isotope has a half-life of just 58 minutes. Interestingly, nobelium is one of the few late actinides that preferentially exists as a 2+ ion in solution, unlike most of its neighbors which prefer 3+. It has no practical applications outside fundamental research.

Nobelium's symbol 'No' is one of the most recognizable two-letter elements in Spellement. It directly matches the common English word 'no,' and it starts words like 'note,' 'north,' and 'noble.' This makes nobelium a natural and highly useful element for creative word building.
