Cerium

Cerium was discovered in 1803 and named after Ceres, the Roman goddess of agriculture — and also after the dwarf planet Ceres, which had just been discovered two years earlier. It is the most abundant of the rare earth elements, which is ironic since 'rare earth' suggests scarcity. Cerium is actually more abundant in Earth's crust than copper or lead.

Cerium oxide is the secret ingredient behind self-cleaning ovens — it catalyzes the burning of food residue at lower temperatures. It is also used to polish glass and lenses, and it is a component of catalytic converters in cars. Cerium compounds are used in the glass of UV-protective sunglasses and in the screens of some TVs. Lighter flints contain cerium alloy, producing sparks when struck.
