Sulfur

Sulfur is one of the oldest known elements — ancient civilizations called it 'brimstone' and associated it with volcanoes and the underworld. Today sulfur is essential for making sulfuric acid, the most widely produced chemical in the world, used in fertilizers, batteries, and manufacturing. Sulfur is also vital for life — it is found in two of the twenty amino acids that build proteins in your body. Hot springs and volcanic vents often smell like sulfur, and Jupiter's moon Io is covered in sulfur deposits, giving it a yellow-orange appearance.
