Oxygen

Oxygen is the element you literally cannot live without. Every breath you take pulls oxygen into your lungs, where it fuels your cells. Joseph Priestley and Carl Wilhelm Scheele independently discovered it in the 1770s, but Lavoisier gave it the name we use today, from Greek words meaning 'acid-former.' Fun fact: oxygen is actually colorless as a gas but turns a beautiful pale blue as a liquid!

Oxygen makes up about 21% of Earth's atmosphere and nearly 50% of the Earth's crust by mass. It is essential for combustion — nothing can burn without it. Hospitals use pure oxygen to help patients breathe, and astronauts carry oxygen tanks in space. The ozone layer, made of three oxygen atoms bonded together (O₃), protects us from the Sun's harmful ultraviolet rays.
