Praseodymium

Praseodymium has one of the most tongue-twisting names on the periodic table (it is 'pray-zee-oh-DIM-ee-um'). Discovered in 1885 by Carl Auer von Welsbach, its name comes from the Greek 'prasios didymos,' meaning 'green twin,' because it was separated from a substance called didymium and its salts produce a distinctive green color.

Praseodymium is used in high-strength magnets (combined with neodymium), aircraft engines, and special welding goggles that protect against the intense yellow light produced during glass blowing. Praseodymium oxide gives glass and ceramics a beautiful yellow-green color. It is also used in the cores of carbon arc lights, which were once the standard for movie projector lighting in early cinemas around the world.
