Silicon is the element that powers the digital age. Every computer chip, smartphone processor, and solar panel relies on silicon's special semiconductor properties. Discovered in 1824 by Jöns Jacob Berzelius, silicon is the second most abundant element in Earth's crust after oxygen. Sand on the beach? That is mostly silicon dioxide, also known as silica!

Silicon Valley in California got its name because the first tech companies there built silicon-based computer chips. Pure silicon crystals are grown in labs to make the wafers that become microprocessors. Silicon is also used in silicone (with an 'e'), which shows up in kitchen utensils, medical implants, and waterproof sealants — though silicon and silicone are definitely not the same thing.
