Einsteinium

Einsteinium is named after Albert Einstein, the legendary physicist whose equation E=mc² unlocked the understanding of nuclear energy. Einsteinium was first identified in 1952 in the debris of the first hydrogen bomb test (Operation Ivy) on Enewetak Atoll in the Pacific Ocean. Its discovery was initially classified as top secret by the US government.

Einsteinium is produced in incredibly tiny amounts in nuclear reactors. Only about 300 micrograms have been accumulated at once, making it extremely difficult to study. In 2021, scientists at Berkeley Lab managed to measure some of einsteinium's basic chemical properties for the first time, over 68 years after its discovery. It has no commercial applications and is used only for scientific research to produce heavier elements.
