Fermium

Fermium is named after Enrico Fermi, the Italian-American physicist who built the first nuclear reactor. Like einsteinium, fermium was discovered in 1952 in the fallout from the first hydrogen bomb test. Albert Ghiorso and his team identified it at the University of California, Berkeley. The discovery was kept secret for several years for national security reasons.

Fermium is produced in nuclear reactors but only in picogram quantities (trillionths of a gram). Its most stable isotope, fermium-257, has a half-life of about 100 days. Because so little fermium exists at any time, scientists know relatively little about its bulk properties — no one has ever seen enough fermium to know what color it is! It is used solely for scientific research, primarily to study the properties of heavy elements.

Fermium's symbol 'Fm' is a distinctive two-letter element in Spellement. While 'fm' is uncommon at word beginnings, partial emphasis allows using 'f' or 'm' individually. Both are common English consonants, making fermium a useful tool for creative element-based word construction.
