Tellurium

Tellurium is named after 'Tellus,' the Latin word for Earth. It was discovered in 1782 by Franz-Joseph Müller von Reichenstein in gold ores from Romania. Tellurium is a rare, brittle metalloid with a fascinating property: if you accidentally ingest even tiny amounts, your breath and sweat will smell like garlic for weeks — a condition called 'tellurium breath' that has no cure except waiting it out.

Tellurium is used in solar panels (cadmium telluride thin-film cells are one of the most cost-effective solar technologies), thermoelectric devices that convert heat to electricity, and as an additive to steel and copper to make them easier to machine. Tellurium is rarer in Earth's crust than gold and platinum, making it one of the scarcest solid elements.
