Astatine

Astatine is the rarest naturally occurring element — at any given moment, there are only about 25 grams of astatine in the entire Earth's crust. Synthesized in 1940 by Dale Corson, Kenneth Ross MacKenzie, and Emilio Segrè at the University of California, Berkeley, its name comes from the Greek 'astatos,' meaning unstable, because its most stable isotope has a half-life of only 8.1 hours.

Because astatine is so rare and decays so quickly, scientists have never gathered enough to see it with the naked eye — most of what we know about it comes from studying tiny amounts or from theoretical predictions. Astatine-211 is being investigated as a cancer treatment because it could deliver powerful but short-range radiation directly to tumor cells, destroying them while sparing nearby healthy tissue.
