Polonium

Polonium was discovered in 1898 by Marie and Pierre Curie, who named it after Marie's homeland of Poland — at the time, Poland did not exist as an independent country, so the name was also a political statement supporting Polish independence. Polonium was the first element discovered through its radioactivity, and Marie Curie extracted it from tons of uranium ore called pitchblende.

Polonium is extremely radioactive and incredibly dangerous — a speck the size of a grain of salt contains enough radiation to be lethal. It gained infamy in 2006 when former Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko was assassinated with polonium-210 slipped into his tea in London. Despite its dangers, polonium has been used in anti-static devices and as a heat source for space satellites.
