Osmium

Osmium is the densest naturally occurring element — a cube of osmium the size of a baseball would weigh about 14 kilograms (31 pounds)! Discovered in 1803 by Smithson Tennant, osmium gets its name from the Greek 'osme,' meaning smell, because osmium tetroxide has a strong, unpleasant chlorine-like odor and is highly toxic.

Osmium is incredibly hard and has the highest compressive strength of any element. It is used in specialized applications where extreme durability is needed — fountain pen tips, electrical contacts, and instrument pivots. Osmium alloys are used in fingerprint detection equipment by forensic scientists. Despite being incredibly dense, osmium is brittle and cannot be worked by hammering or bending like most metals.
