Antimony

Antimony's symbol 'Sb' comes from 'stibium,' its Latin name, which traces back to the ancient Egyptian word for the cosmetic stibnite. Ancient Egyptians used antimony sulfide (stibnite) as black eyeliner — Cleopatra reportedly wore it. The element has been known since antiquity, and its metallic form was first described by Vannoccio Biringuccio in 1540.

Antimony is a brittle, silvery metalloid used primarily as a flame retardant in plastics, textiles, and electronics. It makes materials much harder to ignite, potentially saving lives. Antimony compounds are also used in car batteries (lead-antimony alloy) and in the manufacture of semiconductors. Interestingly, antimony pills were once used as reusable laxatives in the 18th century — they were passed down through families!
