Bromine

Bromine is one of only two elements that are liquid at room temperature (the other is mercury). Its name comes from the Greek word 'bromos,' meaning stench, because bromine has an intensely unpleasant smell. Discovered in 1826 by Antoine Jérôme Balard, bromine is a dark reddish-brown liquid that produces choking, hazardous fumes when it evaporates.

Bromine compounds were once widely used in photography — silver bromide crystals on film react to light, capturing images. Bromine was also a key ingredient in early sedatives and anticonvulsant medications. Today, bromine compounds are used as flame retardants in electronics, furniture, and building materials. Seawater contains dissolved bromine, and the Dead Sea is an especially rich natural source.
