Radium

Radium was discovered in 1898 by Marie and Pierre Curie, who spent years processing tons of uranium ore to isolate just one-tenth of a gram. Radium literally glows in the dark with an eerie blue light and emits so much heat from radioactive decay that it is always warmer than its surroundings. Marie Curie carried radium samples in her pockets and stored them in her desk — she later died from radiation-related illness.

In the early 1900s, radium was added to all sorts of products — glow-in-the-dark watch dials, toothpaste, hair cream, and even chocolate. The tragic story of the 'Radium Girls,' factory workers who painted watch dials with radium paint and suffered horrible radiation poisoning, led to major improvements in workplace safety laws. Today, radium is used only in very specialized applications like certain cancer treatments.
