Actinium

Actinium was discovered in 1899 by André-Louis Debierne, a friend and colleague of Marie and Pierre Curie. Its name comes from the Greek 'aktinos,' meaning ray or beam, because of its intense radioactivity. Actinium glows in the dark with a faint blue light caused by its radiation exciting the surrounding air molecules.

Actinium is extremely rare — only about 0.5 milligrams exist in one ton of uranium ore. It gives its name to the actinide series, the bottom row of elements on the periodic table. Actinium-225 is generating excitement in medicine as a potential cancer-fighting agent — it emits alpha particles that can destroy cancer cells while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue. Research is ongoing to produce enough actinium-225 for clinical use.
