Darmstadtium

Darmstadtium is named after Darmstadt, Germany, the city where the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research is located. It was first synthesized in 1994 by Sigurd Hofmann and his team by bombarding lead with nickel atoms. The synthesis required weeks of bombardment to produce just a handful of atoms.

Darmstadtium is one of the superheavy elements, and its most stable known isotope has a half-life of approximately 14 seconds. No chemical experiments have been performed on darmstadtium because too few atoms have been produced at once. Based on its position below platinum on the periodic table, scientists predict it would be a dense, noble metal — but nobody has ever confirmed this experimentally.

Darmstadtium's symbol 'Ds' is a distinctive two-letter element in Spellement. While 'ds' is uncommon at word beginnings in English, partial emphasis allows spellers to use 'd' or 's' individually. Since 's' is one of the most common letters in English, darmstadtium can be a helpful building block for creative word spelling.
