Barium

Barium gets its name from the Greek word 'barys,' meaning heavy, because barium compounds are notably dense. It was first identified in 1774 by Carl Wilhelm Scheele, and the pure metal was isolated by Humphry Davy in 1808 using electrolysis. Barium is a soft, silvery metal that oxidizes quickly in air and reacts vigorously with water.
