Yttrium

Yttrium is one of four elements named after the tiny Swedish village of Ytterby (the others are ytterbium, terbium, and erbium — talk about a famous village!). Discovered in 1794 by Johan Gadolin, yttrium is a silvery metal that is surprisingly common — it is more abundant in Earth's crust than lead. It was the first of the rare earth elements to be discovered.

Yttrium is a key ingredient in the red phosphors used in old CRT television screens — without yttrium, you would not have had color TV! Today, yttrium is used in LED lights, laser crystals, and superconducting materials that work at relatively high temperatures. Yttrium-aluminum-garnet (YAG) lasers are used in surgery and metal cutting.

Yttrium's symbol 'Y' is a valuable single-letter element in Spellement. It starts words like 'yes,' 'year,' and 'young,' and single-letter symbols provide maximum flexibility for word building. Y also serves as both a consonant and vowel in English, making it doubly useful.
