Zirconium

Zirconium gets its name from the mineral zircon, which has been prized as a gemstone for thousands of years across many cultures. Martin Heinrich Klaproth discovered the element in 1789, but pure zirconium metal was not produced until 1925. Cubic zirconia, a synthetic gemstone made from zirconium dioxide, looks so much like diamond that it fooled jewelers for years.

Zirconium is incredibly resistant to corrosion and does not absorb neutrons easily, making it the perfect material for the fuel rod cladding in nuclear reactors. It is also used in high-performance ceramics, surgical instruments, and even some deodorants. Zirconium alloys can withstand temperatures over 2,000 degrees Celsius without breaking down.

Zirconium's symbol 'Zr' is a distinctive two-letter element in Spellement. While 'zr' is rare in English words, partial emphasis allows spellers to use 'z' or 'r' individually. The 'z' option is especially valuable since few elements provide this uncommon but eye-catching letter.
