Strontium

Strontium is named after Strontian, a tiny village in the Scottish Highlands where it was discovered in 1790. Humphry Davy isolated the pure metal in 1808. Strontium is best known for producing the brilliant red colors in fireworks — if you have ever oohed and aahed at a deep red firework burst, you were admiring strontium compounds at work.

Strontium-90, a radioactive isotope, was a major concern during nuclear weapons testing in the 1950s and 60s because it can replace calcium in bones and teeth. On the positive side, strontium ranelate is used as a medicine to treat osteoporosis and strengthen bones. Strontium aluminate is the material behind long-lasting glow-in-the-dark stickers and toys.
