Rutherfordium

Rutherfordium is named after Ernest Rutherford, the New Zealand-born physicist known as the 'father of nuclear physics' who discovered the atomic nucleus. Rutherfordium was first synthesized in 1964 by a Soviet team led by Georgy Flerov at Dubna, Russia, and independently by an American team at Berkeley. A naming dispute between the two teams lasted for decades.

Rutherfordium is the first of the transactinide elements (beyond the actinide series). It is produced by bombarding lighter elements together in particle accelerators. Only a few atoms have ever been made at once, and its most stable isotope lasts about 1.3 hours. Chemical experiments suggest rutherfordium behaves similarly to hafnium and zirconium. It has no applications outside fundamental nuclear and chemical research.

Rutherfordium's symbol 'Rf' is a distinctive two-letter element in Spellement. While 'rf' is rare at word beginnings, partial emphasis allows using 'r' or 'f' individually. Both are common English consonants, making rutherfordium a flexible option for creative element-based word building.
