Flerovium

Flerovium is named after the Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions in Dubna, Russia, which itself is named after Georgy Flerov, the Soviet physicist who led the discovery of many transuranium elements. Flerovium was first synthesized in 1998 by a team led by Yuri Oganessian by bombarding plutonium with calcium atoms.

Flerovium sits below lead on the periodic table, but scientists predict it might not behave like a typical metal. Due to extreme relativistic effects on its electrons (they move at speeds close to the speed of light), flerovium might be more volatile than expected and could even behave somewhat like a noble gas. Its most stable isotope has a half-life of about 2.6 seconds. Confirming these predictions is one of the exciting frontiers of superheavy element chemistry.
