Lutetium

Lutetium is the last and heaviest of the lanthanide elements. It was independently discovered in 1907 by three scientists: Georges Urbain, Carl Auer von Welsbach, and Charles James. The name comes from Lutetia, the ancient Roman name for Paris, because Urbain was French. Lutetium is the hardest and densest of the lanthanides.

Lutetium is used in PET scanners (lutetium oxyorthosilicate crystals detect the gamma rays produced during PET scans), petroleum refining as a catalyst, and in certain cancer treatments. Lutetium-177 is a promising radioactive isotope being used in targeted cancer therapy, delivering radiation directly to tumors while minimizing damage to healthy tissue. Despite its usefulness, lutetium remains one of the most expensive rare earth elements.
