Hafnium

Hafnium is named after Hafnia, the Latin name for Copenhagen, Denmark, where it was discovered in 1923 by Dirk Coster and George de Hevesy. Its discovery ended a long search — element 72 was one of the last stable elements to be identified. Hafnium is always found alongside zirconium in nature, and separating the two is extremely difficult because their chemical properties are nearly identical.

Hafnium is used in nuclear reactor control rods because it absorbs neutrons exceptionally well — the opposite of zirconium, which lets neutrons pass through. Computer chip manufacturers use hafnium oxide as an insulating layer in the tiny transistors inside modern processors (since about 2007, Intel and others have used hafnium in their chips). Hafnium alloys are used in jet engines and plasma torches.

Hafnium's symbol 'Hf' is a distinctive two-letter element in Spellement. While 'hf' is rare in English words, partial emphasis lets spellers use 'h' or 'f' individually. Both are common consonants, making hafnium a flexible tool for creative element-based word spelling.
