Samarium

Samarium is named after the mineral samarskite, which in turn was named after Vasili Samarsky-Bykhovets, a Russian mining official. This makes him the first person to have an element named after him (indirectly). Samarium was discovered in 1879 by Paul Émile Lecoq de Boisbaudran using spectroscopy.

Samarium-cobalt magnets were the first rare-earth magnets, developed in the 1970s. While not as strong as neodymium magnets, they work better at high temperatures and resist corrosion, making them ideal for military applications and jet engines. Samarium is also used in cancer treatment — samarium-153 is injected to relieve pain from bone cancer. Samarium oxide is used in glass that absorbs infrared light and in nuclear reactor control rods.
