Platinum

Platinum was used by ancient South American civilizations long before Europeans encountered it. When Spanish conquistadors found platinum in Colombian river sands, they dismissed it as 'platina' — little silver — and considered it worthless! They even threw it back into rivers. Platinum was not recognized as a distinct element until 1735 by Antonio de Ulloa.

Platinum is now one of the most valuable metals on Earth. About 40% goes into catalytic converters that reduce harmful car emissions. Platinum is also the metal of choice for high-end jewelry (it is rarer and more durable than gold), laboratory equipment, cancer drugs (cisplatin), and fuel cells for clean energy. The original standard kilogram and meter were made from platinum-iridium alloy.

Platinum's symbol 'Pt' is a distinctive two-letter element in Spellement. While 'pt' is rare at the start of English words, partial emphasis allows spellers to use 'p' or 't' individually — both extremely common consonants that serve as versatile building blocks for word construction.
