Neptunium

Neptunium was the first synthetic transuranium element — an element beyond uranium on the periodic table. Created in 1940 by Edwin McMillan and Philip Abelson at the University of California, Berkeley, it was named after Neptune because uranium was named after Uranus, and Neptune is the next planet out. McMillan later won the Nobel Prize for this work.

Neptunium is produced as a byproduct in nuclear reactors and has very few practical applications. Small amounts are used in neutron detection instruments, and neptunium-237 is used as a precursor to produce plutonium-238 for spacecraft power sources. Neptunium is radioactive with a half-life of about 2.14 million years — long enough to be a waste disposal concern but too short to be found naturally in significant quantities.

Neptunium's symbol 'Np' is a distinctive two-letter element in Spellement. While 'np' is uncommon at word beginnings in English, partial emphasis lets spellers use 'n' or 'p' individually — both common consonants that appear in countless English words, providing reliable word-building flexibility.
