Neon

Neon is the element that lights up the night. Those glowing red-orange signs you see on diners, theaters, and city streets? Neon was discovered in 1898 by William Ramsay and Morris Travers, who were literally chilling liquid air and collecting the gases that boiled off.

Neon is a noble gas, meaning it almost never bonds with other elements. It is one of the rarest elements in Earth's atmosphere, making up only about 0.0018%. Despite this, the universe has plenty — it is the fifth most abundant element in the cosmos. Neon is also used in high-voltage warning indicators and lightning arresters.
