Manganese

Manganese is the unsung hero of the steel industry. About 90% of all manganese produced goes into making steel stronger and more resistant to wear. Discovered in 1774 by Johan Gottlieb Gahn, manganese was often confused with magnesium in early chemistry — their names and properties were mixed up for years, and the confusion persists in some languages today.

Manganese dioxide has been used since prehistoric times — cave paintings from 30,000 years ago used it as a black pigment. Today, manganese is found in the batteries of your TV remote and flashlight (alkaline batteries contain manganese dioxide). Your body needs tiny amounts of manganese for bone health and metabolism, and it is found in nuts, whole grains, and tea.
