Dysprosium

Dysprosium gets its name from the Greek word 'dysprositos,' meaning 'hard to get at,' because it was extremely difficult to isolate from other rare earth elements. Paul Émile Lecoq de Boisbaudran discovered it in 1886. Pure dysprosium was not produced until the 1950s, and even today, separating it from similar elements remains a challenge.

Dysprosium is a critical ingredient in the world's strongest permanent magnets. Adding dysprosium to neodymium magnets allows them to work at higher temperatures without losing their magnetic strength — essential for electric vehicle motors, wind turbine generators, and industrial robots. Dysprosium is also used in nuclear reactor control rods and in data storage devices. Growing demand for electric vehicles has made dysprosium a strategically important element.

Dysprosium's symbol 'Dy' is a unique two-letter element in Spellement. While 'dy' appears in words like 'dynamic' and 'dye,' partial emphasis also allows using 'd' or 'y' individually, with 'y' being especially valuable as it can serve as both a vowel and consonant.
