Curium

Curium was named in honor of Marie and Pierre Curie, the pioneering scientists who discovered radium and polonium. It was first synthesized in 1944 by Glenn Seaborg, Ralph James, and Albert Ghiorso by bombarding plutonium with alpha particles. Curium is so intensely radioactive that it glows in the dark with a violet-purple light.

Curium-244 has been used as a power source for space missions. The alpha particles it emits generate heat, which can be converted to electricity. Curium has also been used in alpha particle X-ray spectrometers aboard Mars rovers (Spirit, Opportunity, and Curiosity) to analyze the chemical composition of Martian rocks and soil. In a way, curium has literally explored another planet!

Curium's symbol 'Cm' is a distinctive two-letter element in Spellement. While 'cm' is rare at word beginnings, partial emphasis allows spellers to use 'c' or 'm' individually — both common consonants that appear frequently in English words, making curium a flexible tool for creative spelling.
