Americium

Americium is named after the Americas, following the pattern of europium being named after Europe. It was first synthesized in 1944 by Glenn Seaborg and his team at the University of Chicago during the Manhattan Project. Americium might be the most encountered synthetic element in everyday life — americium-241 is used in nearly every household smoke detector.
