The Longest Words You Can Spell with Periodic Table Elements

Quick Answer

We ran the Spellement algorithm across a 70,000-word English dictionary. The longest spellable words are COUNTERREVOLUTIONARIES and ELECTROENCEPHALOGRAPHS22 letters each. If you insist on whole element symbols only, the champions are CONVERSATIONALISTS and HYPERSENSITIVITIES at 18 letters. The longest common word is TELECOMMUNICATIONS (18), and the longest everyday name is CHRISTOPHER (11).

And one number that surprised even us: 96.6% of the entire dictionary is spellable. More on that below.

Two Games, Two Champions

Before crowning anything, you have to decide which game you're playing.

The strict game uses whole element symbols only: BaCoN is Ba + Co + N, and every letter must be covered by a complete symbol. This is the version quiz questions mean when they ask which word can be "spelled in full by combining chemical symbols" — the same rule we used to settle whether SCIENCE can be spelled with the periodic table (strictly, it can't).

The partial-emphasis game allows borrowing one letter from a two-letter symbol — taking just the E from Europium (Eu) or the R from Rubidium (Rb). The full tile is shown with the borrowed letter emphasized. This is how the Spell tool unlocks words the strict game can't touch.

Each game has its own record holder.

The Longest Words with Whole Symbols Only

The strict game is the real sport — only 17.6% of the dictionary survives it. At the top:

  • CONVERSATIONALISTS (18) — Co · N · V · Er · S · At · I · O · Na · Li · S · Ts. The finale is Ts, Tennessine, one of the newest elements on the table (confirmed in 2016). An 18-letter word that ends on an element discovered within the last decade.
  • HYPERSENSITIVITIES (18) — H · Y · P · Er · Se · N · Si · Ti · V · I · Ti · Es.
  • TINTINNABULATIONS (17) — Ti · N · Ti · N · Na · B · U · La · Ti · O · N · S. The ringing of bells, spelled almost entirely in Titanium and Nitrogen. The prettiest word on this list.
  • PARAPROFESSIONALS (17) — Pa · Ra · Pr · O · Fe · S · Si · O · N · Al · S.
  • COUNTERESPIONAGE (16) — Co · U · N · Te · Re · S · P · I · O · Na · Ge.
  • NONPROLIFERATION (16) — No · N · Pr · O · Li · Fe · Ra · Ti · O · N. Sixteen letters in only ten tiles — and yes, the word about nuclear treaties spells with Nobelium and Iron.
  • CANTANKEROUSNESS (16) — Ca · N · Ta · N · K · Er · O · U · Sn · Es · S.

The Longest Words Overall

Allow partial emphasis and the dictionary ceiling jumps four letters (rarer words go further still — see Beyond the Dictionary below):

  • COUNTERREVOLUTIONARIES (22) — Co · U · N · Te · Rb · Re · V · O · Lu · Ti · O · Na · Rb · I · Es. Fifteen tiles, and only two of them (Rubidium, lending its R twice) are partial. Cobalt to Einsteinium in one word.
  • ELECTROENCEPHALOGRAPHS (22) — the brain-scan machines. This one leans harder on partial emphasis, but it ends on a flourish: Og (Oganesson) and Hs (Hassium), two of the heaviest elements known.
  • UNCHARACTERISTICALLY (20) — U · N · C · H · Ar · Ac · Te · Rb · I · S · Ti · Ca · Li · Li · Y.
  • COUNTERINTELLIGENCE (19) — nineteen letters in just twelve tiles.

Beyond the Dictionary

Those 22-letter champions are the longest words in a standard 70,000-word dictionary — but the dictionary is not the limit. The algorithm has no length ceiling of its own; the only thing that stops a word is a J or a Q (more on why in the next section). Reach past common word lists into the rarer, more technical corners of English and the records fall. Every one of these spells, and the Spell tool renders each on Premium (up to 30 characters):

  • NONREPRESENTATIONALISMS (23) — No · N · Re · P · Re · Se · N · Ta · Ti · O · Na · Li · Sm · S. Twenty-three letters, and every single tile is a whole element symbol — no partial emphasis anywhere. It beats CONVERSATIONALISTS at the strict game by five full letters.
  • INTERSUBSTITUTABILITIES (23) — In · Te · Rb · S · U · B · S · Ti · Ti · U · Ta · Bi · Li · Ti · Es. Also 23 letters, this one borrowing a couple of letters (Rubidium's R, Titanium's T) across its fifteen tiles.
  • IRREPRESSIBILITIES (18) — Ir · Re · Pr · Es · Si · Bi · Li · Ti · Es. It ties the strict-game record at 18 letters but does it in just nine tiles, every one a two-letter symbol — arguably the most elegant whole-symbol spelling on this entire page.
  • PHOTOCONDUCTIVITY (17) — P · Ho · Ti · O · Co · Nd · U · C · Ti · V · I · Ti · Y. A real physics term, carried largely by Titanium.

None of these appear in the 70,000-word list we scanned — which is exactly the point. The ceiling isn't chemistry, it's vocabulary. Keep feeding the tool rarer words with no J and no Q, and it keeps spelling them.

Why 96.6% of English Is Spellable

Here's the revelation hiding in the data. When we ran the algorithm across all 70,447 dictionary words, 68,086 of them — 96.6% — were spellable with partial emphasis.

The reason is elegant: every letter of the alphabet except J and Q appears as the first letter of at least one element symbol. E opens Erbium, M opens Magnesium, R opens Rubidium — so with partial emphasis, every non-J, non-Q letter can always be produced. Which means the partial-emphasis game reduces to a single rule: if your word has no J and no Q, it can be spelled — at any length.

The 3.4% of words that fail all contain those two letters, and there is no workaround: J and Q appear in no element symbol, period.

The Longest Common Words

Dictionary champions are fun, but nobody puts COUNTERREVOLUTIONARIES on a poster. From the 10,000 most common English words:

  • TELECOMMUNICATIONS (18) — the longest common word overall.
  • RESPONSIBILITIES (16) — the longest common word in the strict game, and remarkably efficient: Re · S · Po · N · Si · Bi · Li · Ti · Es. Sixteen letters, nine tiles, zero tricks.
  • CONGRATULATIONS (15) — the one you'll actually want to print. Perfect for graduation cards with a chemistry twist.
  • CHARACTERISTICS (15) and INSTRUMENTATION (15) round out the podium.

The Longest Names

From the 1,000 most common first names, the crown goes to CHRISTOPHER — 11 letters, with Helium hiding in plain sight: christopHEr. See its full page with the element breakdown.

But the most elegant long name is a strict-game gem: CATHERINE — nine letters in five perfect whole symbols: Ca (Calcium) · Th (Thorium) · Er (Erbium) · I (Iodine) · Ne (Neon). Her sister spelling KATHERINE works strictly too (K · At · H · Er · I · Ne). Browse the names index for 900+ more.

Bonus Round: Single-Letter Elements Only

The hardest game of all: every letter must be its own element — no two-letter symbols at all. Only 14 letters qualify (B, C, F, H, I, K, N, O, P, S, U, V, W, Y), and the longest word made purely of them is:

There's something poetic about INCONSPICUOUS being the longest word that hides in the simplest elements.

Try to Beat the Record

Every word above renders in the Spell tool — type any candidate and it finds every valid combination, whole-symbol matches first, partial emphasis where needed. (The tool handles words up to 30 characters on Premium, so even the 22-letter champions fit with room to spare. Seasonal favorite THANKSGIVING is a mere 12.)

Think you can find something longer than 23 letters without a J or Q? They're out there — we only scanned 70,000 words, and the rarer corners of English (as Beyond the Dictionary shows) run past the dictionary champions.
